The Gaslight Anthem "The '59 Sound" |
One of our geniuses writes in with a new painting inspired by the class.... >>I am a senior art major, and this class was truly >>inspirational for me and for my work. >>After learning about Rita Hayworth and her identity issues, and by >>watching Gilda, I was so inspired that I had to do a painting of her for >>my painting class. The painting is of her posed as the 'Classic Mexican >>Calendar Girl.' I also did another painting of San Francisco, my home, in >>response to Mahcic and Tomas's nostalgia of his home. (Not to mention, I >>was a transfer student from Pratt Institute, the same school Daniel >> Clowes went to, and the school he wrote "Art School Condidential" about). Beverly Enright |
Eduardo Santacruz is back in the house with a trailer for a forthcoming film that blends key themes from our class: |
A student writes in: I
meant to point this out to Oliver Mayer after class got out but by that
time it had slipped my mind. I found it very interesting how he
talked about how all of us have secrets that we bury and try to forget
but its the unearthing of them that will set us free and allow us to
live our lives. There is a website you may have heard of that I
am obsessed with...it is called postsecret. It is "an on going
community art project"...I did a report on it last year in a class and
have been in love with the website for a number of years now.
There is a guy in Germantown Maryland (I believe) that collects peoples
secrets. He allows and even encourages people from all walks of
life to make a post card and write in some way or express in anyway
what their secret is and he anonymously posts them on his website so
that people, like myself, can look and marvel at all of the secrets and
find secrets we can relate to and know we are not alone in the
world. Some of the secrets are funny and some are very serious,
but they are all secrets and are all equal on the website. The
creater of this website has events on college campus' across America
and was at USC a few weeks ago. Unfortunately I was unable to
attend the event since it was on a Tuesday night but would LOVE to see
him someday speak about his website and the things he does with
it. It has become a very powerful site and for awhile there was a
suicide hotline phone number on the site. My friends and I have
made a number of postcards with our secrets on them and have sent them
into him but since he recieves thousands of the postcards a day we have
never made it on the website. He has also published three books
of secrets and we were also not featured in those. Just something
I found interesting.... The website is http://postsecret.blogspot.com He puts up new secrets each Sunday and many people have made video's(more like slide shows) and posted them on youtube of their favorite postcards... Thanks, Kristi Starlin, nakedMIRRORS student ps from Professor Nericcio, these two posted secrets are from anonymous posters to postsecret's website, they are NOT secrets from anyone in the class.] |

Nericcio" I resend the post, I just stumbled upon this image from the Camerahead project choose any of the images from the gallery, they're all cameraheads something to do with ACLU of Washington against the city of seattle putting surveillance cameras in parks. there's also this song by argentine power trio Soda Stereo called "Sobredosis de TV" and the lyrics are about the addiction and dependence on television, and the tv is almost described as if it was a woman, and deep inside its almost as the tv has an effect of self pleasure (aka masturbation). here are the lyrics and here is thevideo and song, very 80's--watch the distorted tv's in the back: I also found a song by Mexican band Liquits called "Cuando Apagues la luz" and is basically about how these two people are going to know themselves in the dark, darkness is light and light is darkness video and lyrics Eddie |

Date: Thu, 02 Oct 2008 00:52:03 -0700 Nericcio — Here's a fun one for all the political intellectual minds in class who haven't seen it yet. Don't vote. Voting is scary and hard. So don't. Unless you care about something, anything.... Then, well, then maybe it's a good idea. |
An artist with a kinship, evocative and moving to Haruki Murakami... |
Just a quick reference to a film that provides the foundation for AFTER DARK--ALPHAVILLE by Jean-Luc Godard Here is the trailer: Here is the full film: |
From: taylorbutz AT gmail.com To: bnericci@mail.sdsu.edu Subject: More Stumbled Upon Art Hello Professor Nericcio, I found another image from the internet that I think you will dig, it has a mirror in the background. Why the mirror sits in the reality of the picture I am not so sure... but I think it is a cool image. Take it easy. Taylor Butz here is the link to the image as well as more of Salamanca's work. |
Another noteworthy artist, Miles Aldridge, plumbing the depths of the naked mirror: |

A great member of the
NakedMIRROR crew who prefers to remain anonymous sends us this link to
ARCADE FIRE's Black Mirror video--the lyrics appear here as well! |
Satire, one of the most popular
literary GENRES, often turns a mirror on the
nation in ways that are outrageous, funny, and timely. Saturday Night
Live has been doing quality (and crappy, at times) satire for years.
Famous satirists in literary history include: SWIFT, VOLTAIRE,
TWAIN, and VONNEGUT.
|
Speaking of fine satire, Berkley Breathed, in OPUS, has been travailing in Twain's vein for years and years (click to enlarge). |
This one is in Spanish!--thanks to yet another anonymous student: don't be so shy! |

Date: Mon, 15 Sep 2008 22:58:39 -0700 This is much more fun than The Daily Aztec: Walt Disney Presents: The Sarah Palin Story I mean, since we all love Disney. Alice even has a cameo in this mashed up history lesson. |
To: memo@sdsu.edu Subject: For your fractured perusal Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 15:00:41 -0400 From: tropicali2 AT aol.com I recently watched that new Mirrors movie, although it wasn't as frightening as I hoped it would be. But I did find some movie photos that I thought were interesting and pertained to the class theme. I've attached 3 here for your visual pleasure. I've also attached 2 photos that surround the artist Alex Grey, and his art installation in NYC called CoSm. You can link the photos to cosm.org Check him out - he's an absolutely amazing creative artist. You'll have fun delving into his website and perusing his intelligence. Ole! ~Jenn |
Kevin
Gossett, GTA extraordinaire, writes in with this missive: "I just
watched that Arcade Fire video like 8 times! Crazy! I can't
help but join in on the artkive fun. Let's start with this one: I
just came across it in a book I bought for an old lit class I took
where our crazy professor made us read art. If it's not perfect for
this class, what is? See you tomorrow, Kevin |
