From time to
time this semester, we will give
our seminar meeting a miss on campus--this
is to
free up time for you to have an "out of
body"
experience, in other words, an aesthetic
experience
that directly relates to the required
course materials
for our special experimental version of
English 525?
MALAS 600a/CLT 595
How does it work?
During the semester we will have MANY
organized,
pre-announced outings. You are
responsible to attend
at least TWO (2) of these--you make the
call! You
are free to attend any or all of them over
and above
the stated requirement.
After you attend these events, send me a
250 word,
one-page piece on this experience--try to
be as
critical/analytical/focused as you can be
(even clever
and brilliant if you can) and try to
conjoin something
of what you have witnessed/experienced to
the
ongoing and evolving interests of our
seminar. While
it is preferred that you post these
writings on our
class Facebook page, you can also just send
them
to me via email with the words OUT OF BODY
in the
subject line, or, OG {Old Gangster}, print
out your
brief essay and hand it to me in class!
So far there are now THREE sanctioned

Go to a screening of THE GREAT GATSBY--a 21st C/Sinematic Rendition of
an early 20th century classic American novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

OUT OF BODY COOL S/CINETREK 7: A trip to DG Wills Bookstore
DG WILLS, run by the one and only biblio-rascal Dennis "D.G." Wills, is
a fixture in the intellectual life of Southern California. Arguably the
most eclectic bookstore south of Powell's Books in Portland and City Lights
in San Francisco, DG Wills stocks used and new books (be sure to look
for the secret entry to the used books section). Your goal on
this C/Sinetrek is to migrate your body north to La Jolla and prowl
this ultra-cool bookstore. Try to find a book by an American writer
that fits the Sex, Drugs, and Rock schema of our class--easier maybe,
find another book written by on of our main authors: Palahniuk,
Vonnegut, Hernandez, Dick, Burroughs etc. To get full credit for this
post, try to take a selfie with Dennis and be sure to tell him that
