When you get an email like this
the first week of class, and you
are an English Professor, you
get a jolt of happiness:

"Hello, I was wondering which copy of THE
REEVE'S TALE, is the best to print out to read. I
wasn't sure if you wanted us to go for the
older or more modern version of the tale. I
want to make sure that I get the true feel of
what you are talking of in class, so I wanted to
double check on the version you wanted.
Thanks so much."

Yes!--now that's a great student!

Here was my answer:

"what an amazing student you are! i would say,
IF you intend to be an english major, to wrestle
with the old english! then read the translation.
if not an english or comparative literature
major or minor (for shame, for shame), JUST
read the translation. thanx for your dedication
so early in the term! you're one in a million,
bill"

In case you don't know what
any of this about, go to the
calendar page of our website!

cheers,

bill

there is a cool happening at the WHISTLESTOP

this is OPEN to all friends and citizens
of E220, THE SEDUCTIVE HALLUCINATION!

first the AD--also attached, from ANNA MARIN,
an outstanding Graduate Student in the Lit
Program
here:

"Dear literaturists, poets, and those seduced
by words: Please join local slam poet and
independent artist Tom?s Riley for a one-of-a-
kind event at SDSU. Thursday, September 21,
from 8:00-9:15 am in GMSC 301, Tom?s will
perform live to an audience of students and
word-lovers alike. Don't miss it!
Support local artists: $5 suggested donation.
More on RILEY here: Be seduced-->
http://yofoolio.com/ "

NOW--the extra-credit assignment!

1. Go online and research RILEY; these two are
good starts:

http://yofoolio.com/

and

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseact
ion=user.viewprofile&friendid=76852981

2. Slip the 5 buck cover in an envelope
decorated with symbols that mirror RILEY's
interests! Make sure you ALSO write
somewhere on the envelope BIG--
e220theSEDUCTIVE_HALLUCINATION. Bring it
to the Riley READING on the morning of
September 21st!

3. Attend the 8am Riley READING--yikes!

4. Write a one to two page ANALYSIS of the
reading/performance written as if you were a
reporter for the LATIMES or NYTIMES--look up
and print out one of their event reviews and
include the one that you used for a model
stapled to your own review.

5. turn it in to me in class on Monday the 25th
of September!

this is an EXTRA-CREDIT assignment, good for
atoning for blown quizzes, excessive absences,
and, it is said, a cure for cases of extreme
aesthetic deprivation!

yours, over and out,

dear E220denizens,

sorry about the last message÷
that's what you get when you write

this SHOULD be better:

CORRECTED MESSAGE PREVIOUS

a beautiful first-week NFL greeting
to the 500 lunatic members of the
seductive hallucination experiment,

when you read OF MICE AND MEN be SURE
to mark it up÷taking notes as you read
either in the book or in separate notes
means you don't have to read the book
a second time if you write a paper on it later!

as you read, think like an ENGLISH PROF!
don't come to class without having highlighted
or tagged two or three places in the reading
where KEY EVENTS happen, or where you
suspect Steinbeck is up to something!

Try to FORGET your reading of the book in
High School; instead, read Steinbeckâs novel
Differently, looking for moments where
elements
of SEDUCTION or HALLUCINATION flow
out of the text.

LENNIE, for instance, peoples his imagination of
the future with visions and hallucinations that
make the grim realities of his present go away;
animals
too are key÷one of the many reasons
Steinbeck
entitled his work _Of MICE and Men.

George, for reasons we need to discuss,
assists Lennie with this fictional odyssey,
facilitates his fantasy. Keep your eye on
George and try to imagine what he
gets out of this singular friendship.

see you tomorrow

Bill Nericcio

ps: A+ students will not only printout
and read the Steinbeck pdf noted in the
calendar;
they will also find a moment in the novel that
coincides with it or vice versa.

students take from 2 to 5 classes a semester
and invariably at least one of them sucks
owing to either it being a pathetic, sociopathic,
burned out professor, boring books, horrible
time, etc.

the best way to protect yourself is to
SCOUT OUT great professors and to select
classes by professor NOT by REQUIRED
NUMBER; as you advance in your major,
the major advisor in your field has MORE
AND MORE power to customize your
course selectiont through the power
of PETITION.

no one will tell you about this; but it
is true.

anyway, my colleagues in women's
studies are having a colloquium and
three of their hotshot profs are
presenting. i doubt attending this
will waste your time and, if you attend
office hours with your GTAs or
myself, we might just ( i said MIGHT)
let YOU pitch a short essay/critique
on the presentations which COULD
figure as an extra-credit project.

do please note the capitalized words
in the proposition previous.

anyway, here's the skinny:

the gifted hacks of the daily aztec
have seen fit to feature your
overworked professor on the COVER
of their daily fishrap, today, tuesday.

...amazing what 100 bucks to the
right reporter can buy you...

1. COMEDY

Before he pissed in his own pool by
running off with his adopted daughter,
forever endearing him to tawdry tabloids,
Woody Allen was (and some would say
IS with his recent MATCH POINT) one of
America's best hallucinators/directors.
TCM, Turner Classic Movies, is running
a commercial-free film festivals of some
of Allen's greatest flicks 2nite; if you
have a minute between sleep, study,
and jello-shots, check it out:

2. HORROR

Video-games are literary, as capable of
seducing and twisting a human mind as any
book or film. See it play out in this wrenching
horrible story of a madman, an internet-based
gamer and would-be "goth" in Montreal:

3. UK TRAVEL | Summer 2007

Just a quick reminder that I am leading a
group of SDSU graduate students and
undergraduates to London for the first part of
Summer 2006. If you are interested on being
on the info list for that trip, merely respond to
this email or click here:

_2007_summer

The latest news is that the LONDON SEMESTER
program and FIE our host UK higher-ed
institution have conspired to offer a tantalizing
offer: the first 20 people to complete their
contract for summer travel will automatically
be registered for a drawing to win FREE round-
trip travel to London and back. Holy incentive,
Batman!
