spellSeptember 24, 2007 Monday

Much of today's discussion will key on your "reading" of Hitchcock's SPELLBOUND; walk into class ready to compose a short in-class essay on what you viewed as the most provocative psychological element of the film--you will do well to carefully review your screening notes as SPECIFICS (motifs, scene shifts, point of view, character names, actors) are key to an A+ level grade--a list of characters and actors from director Hitchcock's opus is here. Additionally, take the weekend and carefully read AURA by Carlos Fuentes--we may have time to discuss Fuentes's uncanny tale a bit today
September 26, 2007 Wednesday

We will devote our discussion today to Carlos Fuentes's AURA--what part of the story touches on our theme of Naked Surrealisms?  What part does not?  Does a novelist's approach to the "surreal" or the "occult" differ from that of an artist.  Find an artist in the Taschen SURREALISM book that evokes the "feel" of AURA.

The poet does not put the wild animals to sleep in order to play the tamer, but, the cages wide open, the keys thrown to the winds, he journeys forth, a traveller who thinks not of himself but of the voyage, of dream beaches, forests of hands, soul-endowed animals, all undeniable surreality.
